31 for 21 - Day 4 - A Night at the Theater

Fourth day blogging 31 for 21!  Don't forget-- every Friday in October I'll be drawing one commentor's name out of each week's comments to win a $10 Starbucks card to enjoy a delicious fall beverage like a hot pumpkin chai latte or a spiced caramel apple cider.

Today I am blogging about an event called "A Night at the Theater" taking place Saturday, October 22nd at St. Ignatius High School.  All of the proceeds go to The Up Side of Downs, which is an organization right here in Northeast Ohio who's mission is to provide support, education, and advocacy for people with Down syndrome, their families and communities.

For our family, the Up Side of Downs has played a large part in our lives from when I was pregnant with Joey.  As soon as I reached out, they mailed me a huge packet of information and the New Parent Coordinator met me for lunch the week before I gave birth to Joey.  Since then, we have joined the Buddy Walk Committee and have met so many, many incredible parents along the way.  Having such a phenomenal resource and group who support individuals with Down syndrome so close has made a major difference in our lives.  They offer seminars for parents, grandparents and caregivers.  They have Moms' Night Outs in multiple areas for mothers to get out of the house and meet.  They have tons of resources on their website.  They plan and host family events all year long.

They advocate with heart and soul for people who have Down syndrome.  For me and Joey they were there from the very beginning and we always be grateful.

The event on the 22nd is sure to be both an entertaining and educational night out.

I hope you will considering attending this fabulous event.

"Wrap Your Heart Around It – A Journey from Depression to Dessert" is an engaging one-woman show filled with both poignancy and fun starring five-time Grammy nominee LynnMarie. You'll be encouraged and entertained, through stories and songs, as LynnMarie reveals how growing up in an ethnic dysfunctional family, being the Adult Child of an Alcoholic, a Special Needs parent and a fumbling, faith-searching woman, all lead her on the road back to joy. The fans and critics have spoken: Robert Deaton, Executive Producer of the Country Music Awards, said, "LynnMarie takes you to a place that's raw, fierce and healing. Her story applies to all of us. I walked away with hope." Lori Duke, the parent of a child with special needs, agrees: "Prepare to be inspired. LynnMarie's honesty and courage will move you beyond belief!" And Blair Gardner, national radio personality says, "LynnMarie provides an unflinching account of what it means to overcome life's greatest challenges. You leave the performance hungry to mount an assault on what holds you back!" The artist, who has performed her unique style of accordion music throughout the U.S. and Europe, as well as on The Tonight Show says, "Think My Big Fat Greek Wedding meets The Vagina Monologues!"

A Clip from Rob's Show

Rob Snow started his stand up career in Chicago in the late 90s, studying at the famed Second City Theatre. After 3 years he decided to put the jokes on hold and concentrate on starting his family and getting a "real" job. Ten years later and a move to Northeast Ohio, he decided he still had some unfinished comedy business. He began performing again in 2009, where he quickly regained his footing and placed 2nd in an Ohio Amateur Comedy contest, then followed that up with a 2nd place finish in the Cleveland Comedy Festival in 2010. He now performs regularly as a feature act at comedy clubs throughout the Midwest. Around the time he restarted his comedy career, his second son, Henry, was born with Down Syndrome. What started as a bit of a surprise has grown into one of the greatest joys of Rob's life.
Rob's show combines his background in comedy with his experience raising a child with Special Needs. This show provides a humorous and candid look at the journey and commonalities families of children with special needs experience. "We Need A Sign" is an inspiring, uplifting, and funny show that all audiences will relate to.
